The euro is the official currency of twenty European Union member states, a group known as the eurozone. It is used by more than 340 million people every day, making it the second-most held reserve currency in the world after the US dollar. A handful of tiny states outside the EU, such as Monaco and Vatican City, also use the euro under formal agreements.
